Do I have Sleep Apnea?

The snoring sound is made when air passes through the airway and causes the throat tissue to vibrate. This is the primary warning sign for a serious and chronic #health problem, which is called sleep apnea. If you suspect you may have sleep apnea, the first thing to do is see your doctor. Your dentist can then help to provide you with a customized oral appliance that will open your airway so you can breathe and get a good night’s sleep!

Preventing Cavities

The two best defenses against tooth decay and gum disease are a healthy, well-balanced diet and good oral hygiene, including daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and rinsing. Your body’s own saliva is also an excellent cavity fighter, because it contains special chemicals that rinse away many harmful materials.
If you have any of the following symptoms, you may have a cavity:
• Unusual sensitivity to hot and cold water or foods.
• A localized pain in your tooth or near the gum line.
• Teeth that change color.

Do you know that 80 percent of the microbial infections in our body are initiated by bacterial growth in form of plaque?

Fact: Do you know that 80 percent of the microbial infections in our body are initiated by bacterial growth in form of plaque? We have always thought that unicellular organisms have no social life! They actually team up, and form collective network called Biofilms. Their structure is much elaborated which enables them to get the nutrients in and the waste out. They are densely packed and can secret toxins. The complex and diverse architecture of biofilms has led to this idea that they are cooperative groups. They cause a number of chronic infections and diseases. The most well-known and studied biofilm bacteria is on teeth and gum, which leads to periodontal disease. Hundreds of microbial plaque colonize in the human mouth, causing tooth decay and gum disease. Plaque is a biofilm on the surfaces of the teeth. The accumulation of microorganisms establishes biofilm that exposes the teeth and gingival tissues to high concentrations of bacterial metabolites, which results in dental disease.

What happens if the plaque is not removed?
Failing to remove plaque can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and eventually to more serious health issues. Plaque that is allowed to remain on teeth can harden into a destructive substance called tartar around the gum line. You can not remove the tartar by brushing; it must be cleaned by your dentist or dental hygienist. The bacteria in plaque and tartar can cause inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. This form of gum disease can deteriorate into a more serious condition called periodontitis, which causes bone loss, and if it is left untreated, can lead to teeth loss.
When was the last time you had a dental cleaning?

A professional cleaning by your dentist or hygienist is very important. This simple procedure should be part of your oral health care regimen to prevent teeth decay (cavities), and gum disease. The cleaning or dental prophylaxis needs to be done regularly.

Why is flossing extremely important?

Every time you visit your dentist, you know the one question he is sure to ask, “Have you been flossing regularly?” It is important to understand that brushing alone cannot clean all of the surfaces of each tooth. Each tooth has five surfaces and the toothbrush can only access three of them, so by flossing you are able to reach the areas that normal brushing cannot access.
People might think that flossing does not do anything significant. Obviously, the bacteria in your mouth are very small which the naked eye cannot see. But believe me, they are between your teeth right now. Overnight the bacteria will reproduce to create more than a million cells from the original cell! By proper flossing, you will remove 40% of the sticky bacteria or plaque from your teeth. As you can see in this real radiograph (X-ray), dental decay has developed due to lack of flossing.

Oral Cancer

Eva Grayzel, a professional interactive performance artist, was diagnosed with late-stage oral cancer at age 33 and told she had a 15 percent chance of survival. After she was cured, she started a Six-Step Screening, to raise public awareness about the early signs of oral cancer.
Oral cancer screening is an examination performed by a dentist to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth.
The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure.
All dentists must perform an examination of your mouth during a routine dental visit to screen for oral cancer.
In the United States approximately 36,500 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer each year and about 7,900 will die from the disease.
Check out for these signs:
Chronic sore throat with or without swelling
Alterations to the color, and texture of mouth tissue
Lump in the neck area
Persistent painful swallowing
